The removal of reimbursements from Patagonian exports, which offset the effect of eliminating retentions, coupled with an accumulated inflation of more than 50 per cent since December 2015 and the stability of the dollar, put the competitiveness of the fishing industry of the Argentinian Patagonia at risk. In this context and thanks to the extraordinary volumes of shrimp catch recorded, it seems to be the only pillar of a shaky industry.

Aqua Firm to Boost Fish Production in Nigeria 17 Apr 2017
 
Following the low production of tilapia fish supply in the country, an aqua firm, Premium Aquaculture has disclosed that it is set to boost tilapia fish production supply with more than 20, 000 MT in next five years. Speaking at the inaugural harvest of tilapia fish at Oyan Dam in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, the Farm Manager, Mr. Govin Daraju said the company was incorporated in 2014 to develop tilapia, catfish and shrimp farming projects across Nigeria.

The National Mission for Clean Ganga has decided to conduct a study on ‘Hilsa’ fish in the Ganga river for its better conservation and management As per the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Hilsa has witnessed a decreasing trend in India and Bangladesh. New Delhi: Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has brought 20 kg of ‘Hilsa’ fish as gift for President Pranab Mukherjee during her ongoing India visit but the species has seen a consistent decline in the country.

Norway’s PM leads seafood mission to China 07 Apr 2017
 
NORWEGIAN prime minister Erna Solberg is this weekend leading a four-day trade mission to China with one of the main goals being to restart normal seafood trading relations between the two countries. She is joined by her foreign minister, Børge Brende. Norway normalised political contact with China in December after a six-year freeze, sparked when the Nobel Peace Prize went to Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo and received Norwegian support.

Seafood exporters say something’s fishy as EU steps up inspections 06 Apr 2017
 
In what appears to be a case of a non-tariff barrier being imposed on shrimp exports from India, the European Union (EU) recently made it mandatory for 50 per cent of each consignment to be tested, against the earlier 10 per cent. Indeed, some in the seafood industry believe the move is aimed at arm-twisting India into making some trade concessions to the EU.

Survey suggest crayfish numbers are dwindling 21 Mar 2017
 
A landmark survey of people who pot and dive for crayfish on the northeast coast between Pakiri and East Cape defies Ministry for Primary Industries’ assurances that the fishery is doing well. More than three quarters (78.6%) of the 822 survey respondents described the size and availability of crayfish in this popular fishery as 1or 2 out of 7. Six per cent rated it as average, and only 2.2% described the fishery as above average.
