Aquaculture production grows

Vietnamese aquaculture output increased 3.3 per cent in May, to 370,000 tonnes, with which the accumulated production in the first five months has shown a growing trend of 2.4 per cent.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the total aquaculture output was 1.23 million tonnes in the period from January to May, VNA reported.

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) stated that India’s inland and marine fisheries production could touch the 16-million metric ton- (MMT) mark by 2019-20, thereby adopting a target-oriented approach to achieve eight per cent growth year-on-year.

EU hooks most of SA's fish exports

Cape Town - Half of all the fish caught in South Africa is exported to the European Union (EU) with Cape hake the most popular fish species, making up more than 50 percent.
This is according to Massimo de Luca, head of trade and economics at the EU delegation to South Africa. He was a key speaker at the Annual Fish SA Conference 2017 at the Lagoon Beach hotel in Milnerton on Wednesday.

Bangladesh bets big on UAE trade.

Bangladesh is keen to boost bilateral trade with the UAE from the existing $1 billion to $5 billion in the next three to four years, its top diplomat says.
Muhammad Imran, ambassador of Bangladesh to the UAE, said his country is one of the fastest growing nations in South Asia sustaining six per cent plus growth rate annually despite a slowdown in global economy. It offers good investment opportunities in one of the most populous countries of the region with 160 million inhabitants, he added.

Shrimp traceability breakthrough

Farmed shrimp from Thailand, Vietnam, and India could be traced back to their countries of origin with more than 98 percent confidence through a process known as elemental profiling, according to a new World Wildlife Fund (WWF) report.
With greater refinement, elemental profiling may help importers, customs officials, retailers, and others trace globally traded seafood back to its source, which can shed light on production practices with critical environmental and social implications.

Fish-farming to head inland in bid to boost exports

Mangalore, May 23 (IANS) Aquaculture, generally associated with coastal areas, will soon head inland in a move that is expected to significantly boost India’s fish exports, according to an official.
The focus on what is called inland aquaculture, especially in landlocked areas, is part of a concerted effort to diversify the country’s fish production and to get more people involved in fish-farming, said A. Jayathilak, Chairman, Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA).
