The Quarantine unit for Tiger Shrimp at the Multispecies Aquaculture Complex (MAC) set up by the Marine Products Export Development Autority (MPEDA) at Vallarpadam herewas inaugurated today by Shri.TarunShridhar IAS, Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Governmentof India.

Speaking  at the function,Shri  Shridhar said  the newly opened unit would regain the pride of place of  the indigenous species  Black Tiger shrimp  in the Indian subcontinent, which is now occupied by the exotic species,Vannamei.

Patting theMPEDA and its research arm Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA)for establishing the MAC, he said the facility will cater to the growing demand for fingerlings of various export-oriented species like Seabass,Cobia,Tilapia and Pompano.

Shri.K.S. Srinivas IAS , Chairman, MPEDA, said this is the first of its kind facility in the west coast,set up  when there is a huge demand for the healthy seeds.
